Another mom lesson

I am writing the materials for a staffing course right now. As I think about ways we can teach people to listen for potential red flags when they are checking references, I am reminded of a lesson I learned a few weeks ago. My teachers: Eve and Chelsa. Aren't they adorable decked out in Jackie's dresses?

It was the end of preschool and some of the children's mothers had come to pick them up. We had been playing in the basement. I went upstairs with the kids whose mom's were here and was helping get their coats on and giving them their crafts etc. Eve and Chelsa were left downstairs alone. They were in the middle of their tea party. A little later, they came upstairs, holding hands:

Eve: Mom, we need to show you something.

Me: I am helping MaryBelle and Terry get there things together.

Eve: Mom, we need to show to something.

Chelsa: yeah.

Me: In a minute Eve. Chelsa should start getting ready too, because her mom will be here soon.

Eve and Chelsa -together - yelling: We have to show you something!

Me: Eve, in a minute, I am doing this first.

Eve: WE NEED TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING RIGHT NOW!

Me:( exasperated) OK, lets go. What do you want to show me?

What was it? They had turned on the sink in the playroom wet bar full blast and it was flooding everywhere. EVERYWHERE

Eve: See, we need to show you this!

Oh boy did they ever. I didn't even know the water was still hooked up to that sink and I certainly never would have thought it was capable of so much water pressure.

So what did I learn?

When you three year old says she needs to show you something, you don't need to go and look right away ( that is craziness), but remember to ask:

" WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SHOW ME?"

Really, it's all about asking the right questions.

Oh - and I also learned that the wet/dry vac we got at Christmas totally works.

What a cute picture! Those two together sure get into some mischief. We might be in trouble when they are teenagers. It's a good thing you had that dry/wet vac.

I love how you can learn the most of serious of lessons from little kids! Too bad we didn't get to see pictures of the flooding bathroom! What? You mean you weren't stopping to admire and photograph the event? ;)
