Reality show woes
The girls and I started watching "So You Think You Can Dance?" together last week when I realized that due to the time shifted channels we could watch is at 7:00. The girls love it so much I feel bad that I did not think to watch it with them sooner. They are riveted through all the performances and then after each number, try to do their favourite moves. My favourites are Alice's little salsa steps and Jackie's dramatic head bobs. Needless to say, it is opening their eyes to some new steps. Of course, they have taken rooting for their favourites to new levels. They don't just like them - they are them. It sounds something like this: "Oh I like that girls dress, I am definitely that girl. Did you see what I did? That was so great, I am very good at kicking!" Jackie drives Alice a little crazy because she changes who she is with every number. We finally had to settle it that Alice is Kady and Jackie is everyone other girl. Anyway - Jackie cried last night, because her favourite was voted off. Or, as she put it when I asked her why she was crying"But Mommy, I was voted off and I won't get to dance anymore, and I love dancing on the show". Identifying too much with reality show contestants has it's dangers. I guess reality shows are difficult when you don't have a grasp on reality.

One of the things I love about kids is how they have to live the stories they see/hear. When we read stories you'll often see Peirce get up and 'act out' something that just happened in the story. I was at the library the other day when a day care group came in and they were reading stories to them. One boy kept doing just what Peirce does...he had comments and questions and had to get up and do what the story was saying...but the lady reading the story kept shushing him and asking him to sit down. Made me sad that some kids don't get the same opportunity to do what comes naturally to them!! I think to put thesmelves into those things they see on that show is so fun!
