The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
Half Broke horses by Jeanette Walls
The House at Riverton by Kim Morton
The Forgotten Garden by Kim Morton
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Summer in the South by Cathy Holton
Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island with Alice - she ditched Harry Potter for Anne Shirley. It was fun reading together and she LOVED the books. We somehow have lost Anne of Windy Poplars so haven't started it yet.
I think my favourite was the Glass Castle and I wish we could do it for book club, but I think some of the ladies would have issues with some of the language. I didn't have issues with it. It was a memoir and if that is how the people talk, that is how the people talk, so I whole heartily will recommend it to people to read, but I don't think I would pick it as a book club book. Half Broke Horses was also amazing, but I think I liked it more because it felt like a prequel to the Glass Castle, since it was about the authors Grandmother. I think the book would be interesting on it's own, but I am not sure. The Kim Morton and Cathy Holton books were great summer reads with family intrigue, mystery and a little romance- so perfect for an afternoon at the beach but too cheesy for book club. All of them took place in the present and in the turn of the century to the 20's - so I got a lot of prohibition and flappers this summer. Water for Elephants was like that to.
Of course the Help was great and I know that others will be recommending it for book club. I think I will recommend Half Broke Horses or books I have read in previous years - The Year of Magical Thinking or The Zookeepers Wife.
Do you have any suggestions?
