On sleep

Me: Did you sleep OK?
Jackie: (angrily) I told you and told you. I ALWAYS save up all my sleep so I always have enough sleep.

It should be noted that Jackie is not at her best in the morning. A Rasmussen trait I think.

Alice (going to bed): Oh, I hope it is a fast night tonight. I hate sleep, it is so boring.

Andrew and I do not think that sleep is boring, nor are we able to "save up enough" of our sleep. Andrew has been wanting a new bed for a long time. I was on the fence, until I saw a 20/20 on sleep and the effects of not getting enough, then I was sold. So we have recently made an investment is better sleep. We are now the proud owners of a KING SIZE LUXURY mattress. Thanks to a small dirt mark on one corner of the mattress, we have a $4000 bed, for $1800. It has graded pocket coils and a Euro-pillow top filled with high quality, breathable memory foam. The mattress itself is like 20 inches high, so even with a small foundation, the bed is HUGE. When I am laying in it, I feel like I am floating on a cloud, and I feel as relaxed as I do in a hot bath. I still don't always fall asleep right away, but when I can't sleep, I don't really care, because I am soo comfortable.

We have had some adjustments due to our latest addition. Here are the top five changes in our life since the new bed....

1. We had to buy new bedding. I was tired of our boring taupe bedding, so I spiced things up by buying the silver gray and white bedding above. Taupe to gray - I know, I'm crazy with colour.

2. I have lost that guilty pleasure of rolling over and using the whole bed when Andrew gets up earlier than I do. There is no possible way I could use the whole bed. It is huge.

3. I no longer have a vibrating mattress. For those that don't know, Andrew shakes in his sleep. With the pocket coils, I no longer feel the rocking. After eight years, I kind of miss it.

4. We may not have any more children. Although Andrew had a hard time getting used to the new bed the first night we slept on it. Since then, he falls asleep almost instantly. In the time it takes me to brush my teeth, Andrew is gone. The other day, he stood there and watched me brush my teeth, so we could actually pray together before bed.

5. I am sleeping way deeper, and no longer hear the kids right away when they are up at night. Jackie had croup and was coughing like crazy, and it took me a long time to register it. Andrew got up to help her before me.

In related news, we now have a queen size bed in the guest bedroom. (Minus the box spring, which could not make it down the stairs. So it is a low profile bed - which only makes our giant king size bed look taller). If you want to come visit, you can stay in our very comfortable guest bedroom that is equipped with it's own ensuite and sleep on our old peasant bed. If you ask us nicely, we might let you have a nap on the new one. If we are not using it at the time.
