Me: A book about how it is not good to give kids rewards and prizes for doing things right.
Jackie: That's crazy, prizes are great.
Alice: I think you should stop reading that. ( Alice really likes her piano practicing chart. It has been very effective)
Jackie: What's the book called?
Me: Punished by rewards.
Jackie: That's not right. If you are getting a reward, that is a good thing, not a bad. Punishments are bad, so if you get something bad, it isn't a reward. It just doesn't make sense. (I can see her thinking hard.) Unless someone hit you on the head with your own trophy.
Gotta love the way her mind works.

Hee hee - I love how the minds of kids work. I agree with everything they say!!
that's funny. I'm reading a book called Drive about the same thing.
I read that book. I couldn't get much past Jackie and Alice's thinking. I understood what Alfie was saying....but still....part of me can't give up the rewards idea :0)
Although, I'm totally with Alfie on The Homework Myth!
I'll have to check out the book drive. Punished by Rewards is really written by an educator, and is very focused around school and more than a little annoying - as if any parent only deals with their children in terms of rewards and punishment. I am interested in the topic though, so would love to hear how Drive is.
